The National Reference Laboratory for Rickettsiosis, Ehrlichiosis and Leptospirosis Diseases

  • The National Reference Laboratories for Rickettsiosis, Ehrlichiosis and Leptospirosis Diseases at the IIBR are responsible for diagnosis of these diseases in clinical samples from patients from Israel's hospitals and clinics.

  • The labs use robust serological and genetic methodologies for the accurate and sensitive detection of pathogens. The main techniques that are the indirect ImmunoFluorescence Assay (IFA) for Rickettsiosis and Micro Agglutination Test (MAT) for Leptospirosis, which are considered the gold standard tests.

  • The lab has developed vast expertise in isolation and cultivation of these pathogens from a variety of clinical samples.

During the summer of 2002, we investigated an outbreak of leptospirosis that involved IDF troops who participated in a military exercise near the Jordan River in northern Israel. Suspected cases were tested and diagnosed as positive. Due to the quick identification, all the patients fully recovered.
