IIBR is the only certificated research laboratory in Israel in the field of physical protection. The physical protection group specializes in sorption and filtration processes, research and development of filter canisters, research on chemical agent permeation through protective clothing, and evaluation of protection provided by respirators, air blowers and protective suits.

Activities include:
- Calculation and development of mathematical models to predict estimates of filter protection under realistic conditions.
- Development of personal filters with lower airflow resistance.
- Investigation of the permeation mechanism of noxious vapors through polymeric and carbon cloth barriers.
- Measurements of permeability of nerve and blister agents through polymeric and carbon cloth barriers.
- Measurements of protection factors of gas masks and personal hoods, during the performance of standard test activities in an aerosol exposure chamber.
- Evaluation of blowers used in respiratory protective equipment.
- Formulation of standard testing protocols representing realistic conditions.
- Evaluation of aging and possibility of extending shelf-life of protective equipment.
